Countess Markievicz - Harley Engle

Harley Engle

Countess Constance Markievicz

Countess Markievicz can easily be considered the most famous woman from the Easter Rising. The 1916 uprising was not her first time breaking rules though. She spent her early life Protestant, wealthy, and educated. This was very different from many of the other rebels. While she may have been wealthy, she certainly did not fit in with the other women in her class. She loved doing things that were not considered “feminine.” She rode her horse all over the land, and she enjoyed having conversations with the peasant workers. Throughout her early adulthood, she organized groups of women on a small scale and won rights in several areas. Countess Constance Markievicz soon became consumed by her feministic desires. She wanted women to have a higher place in society. She was a natural leader who was motivated by her need for equality and freedom for all of Ireland’s people. Constance encouraged young girls to challenge societal norms and stand out. She was a very important figure in the Easter Rising, and her life was spared because she was a woman. Constance disagreed with this decision and wanted to be treated just like the other leaders. No matter the consequence, she was always strong and consistent in her beliefs.
If Countess Markievicz could see what Ireland has become, I believe she would be very proud of the achievements of women. She would likely want Ireland to move even further towards equality for women. She would support all of the beautiful and strong women who work as professors, politicians, and other leaders in the world. Countess Constance would have certainly wanted equality for all of Ireland’s people and would have been completely supportive of the decision that allowed gay people to get married. I feel like I would have been able to hang out with Countess Markievicz. From what I have heard and read about her, she is an outstanding role model for women everywhere, and I hope to become a strong woman just like her.
